From why they've chosen to invest to how they came to love camp, enjoy hearing their stories and getting to know this community better. Meet Allison, a camper turned YSSC staff in 2011-13 who continues to see the value of Star Rock Ministries 10 years later.
"A running joke among my friends and family is, 'Name a topic and Alli can turn it into a story about camp.' As a camper turned staffer, my arsenal of camp anecdotes is deep. But the BEST stories, and my favorites to tell, are the ones where hearts were changed by the space camp creates for God to work in our lives.
I saw kid’s hearts change to love nature when they walked to the lake and realized that they had never been on a trail before in their life. Or the countless times an out-of-breath kiddo would get to the top of Star Rock and be hit with the awe and wonder that the same HUGE God who created our beloved mountain range knows and loves them, intimately.
I saw kids from very diverse backgrounds bond as they uncovered shared experiences like the pains of little siblings or a love of a favorite pop star. I also saw kids slowly realize they have never had a friend with the life experiences of their new camp bestie. It was only in retrospect as an adult that I realized some of my cabinmates were likely sponsored by SRM; at the time our differences were subtle, yet celebrated.
In early 2020, I (like the rest of the world) was forced to reevaluate my priorities and lifestyle. I chose to move out of the Bay Area and live as a digital nomad, working remotely from homes all across the country. As a result, I shifted the way I tithed to church and chose to reinvest those contributions into parachurch ministries that I believe have an extraordinary impact on the people they serve.
